John Cage's most famous work, 4'33" (1952) is a piece where the performer is given no sounds to play: each movement is Tacet (silent.) Although the instrumentation is not specified, it was first performed by pianist David Tudor. It does indeed take practice (with a clock). This cartoon (1932) predates that composition by twenty years.
