Hy Cage or
John Cage
?
While John Cage did not pursue advanced serial techniques in pitch or harmony, he did develop extremely rigorous sytems for generating music, such as densely nested rhythmic proportions (as in Satie,) and organized chance operations (such as I ching, mesostics, star charts, and imperfections in paper.) After creating such precise music, the critics would say, "It's all by chance! He just threw the dice!" For J. Cage, as with many artists, it was 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.
