One person's torture is another's charm. The distinction is also drawn here in the contrast between Cubist and realistic drawing styles. The purpose of music is also called into question: the unfamiliar sounds from another culture register as torture to the European ear. When John Cage began to study Indian music in 1946 he was delighted to discover that music was "to calm and quiet the mind thus rendering it susceptible to divine influences." |
